Additive categories

Food additives are divided into categories according to function which they perform. Most additives are only permitted for usage in certain foods and are subject to specific quantitative limits. Therefore it is important to note that this list should be used in conjunction with the appropriate EU legislation. Additives belonging to classes’ carriers, packaging gases, propellants, foaming agents, humectants, bulking agents and sequestrants can be named on the package by its name or E code only. All other additives must state also the name of the category to which they belong.  If the „E“ falls into more than one category the package should name only the category that corresponds with the purpose for which the additive was used in the relating product.
